The company was named Avon in 1939, after the river that runs through Stratford-On-Avon in the English Midlands. The name is a tribute to McConnell's favorite playwright, William Shakespeare, who hailed from the town.

The Company's products fall into three product categories, beauty, which consists of cosmetics, fragrances, skin care and toiletries, beauty plus, which consists of fashion jewelry, watches, apparel and accessories, and beyond beauty, which consists of home products and gift and decorative products. Sales from Health and Wellness products and mark a global cosmetics brand that focuses on the market for young women, are included among these three categories based on product type. Its business is conducted worldwide primarily in one channel, direct selling.

Avon, the company for women, is a leading global beauty company, with over 8 billion dollars in annual revenue. As the world's largest direct seller, Avon markets to women in well over 100 countries through over five million independent Avon Sales Representatives. Avon's product line includes beauty products, fashion jewelry and apparel, and features such well-recognized brand names as Avon Color, Anew, and much more. Avon products are sold in over 100 countries around the world.
 
During 2005, Avon repurchased 728 million dollars worth of its shares. These repurchases represented the completion of a five-year 1 billion dollars share repurchase program, approved in 2000, as well as the incremental 500 million dollars share repurchase initiative launched August 2, 2005. Avon currently has a five-year 1 billion dollars share repurchase program in place, approved in February 2005.
