Their PharmaCare subsidiary operates 51 specialty pharmacies and is the nation's fourth-largest, full-service pharmacy benefits manager. Total CVS revenues exceeded 37 billion dollars in 2005, with more than 70 percent generated through pharmacy sales.
 
The company operates retail drugstores in the United States. The company, through its stores, offers prescription drugs, general merchandise, including over the counter drugs, beauty products and cosmetics, seasonal merchandise, greeting cards, and convenience foods, and film and photofinishing services. They sell its products through CVS/pharmacy retail stores and online through CVS.com. The company also provides pharmacy benefit management, mail order services, and specialty pharmacy services to managed care and other organizations. As of March 14, 2006, it operated 5,400 retail and specialty pharmacy stores in 37 states and the District of Columbia.
 
They announced that total sales for the five week period which ended on April 1, 2006 was increased by 3.9 billion dollars, compared to 3.5 billion dollars in the prior year, despite being negatively impacted by a later Easter. Total pharmacy sales represented 71.4 percent of total company sales in March. Store sales for the five weeks which ended on April 1, 2006 were increased by 7.0 percent compare to last year period. Pharmacy store sales were increased by 9.1 percent, and were negatively impacted by approximately 200 basis points due to recent generic introductions. Front end same store sales increased by 2.3 percent.
