On the strength of this performance, they were able to raise your dividend by 8 percent going into 2006. The total 2005 return on Edison International stock, including dividends, was 39.6 percent. A standout feature of 2005 for their company was investors’ recognition of substantial value in their unregulated businesses at Edison Mission Group. Going into the year, they believed that relatively little of the value which they saw was reflected in the company’s market valuation which changed with outstanding performance. Their team extensively reduced operating costs, deployed its substantial cash reserves effectively, generated additional cash flows, paid down debt, and achieved record earnings of 441 million dollars.
 
Edison International recorded consolidated earnings per common share of 3.47 dollars in 2005, compared to 2.81 dollars in 2004.   Higher wholesale energy margins and energy trading income at Mission Energy Holding Company were major earnings drivers in 2005.  Reductions and refinancing of debt in 2004 and 2005 resulted in lower interest expense across the company. Core earnings per share of 3.13 dollars in 2005 represented an increase of about 109 percent over prior year’s core earnings of 1.50 dollars per share.
 
The company's management uses core earnings, which exclude earnings from discontinued operations and other non core items, internally for financial planning and for analysis of performance. They also uses core earnings as the primary performance measurement when communicating with analysts and investors regarding its earnings results and outlook as it allows them to more precisely compare the company’s ongoing performance across periods.
