Guardian Investor Services is a member of NASD, the National Association of Securities Dealers. NASD is a self-regulatory organization of the securities industry responsible for the operation and regulation of the NASDQ stock market and over the counter markets. It also administrates exams for the investments professionals, such as the series of 7 exams.

Guardian was founded by Hugo Wesendonck in 1860 in New York. At the time, it was called the Germania Life Insurance Company of New York. Within two short years, the company began opening agencies across the country. They even served policy owners in Colorado, the Dakotas, New Mexico and Arizona, long before these territories became states. In 1868, Germania became the first U.S. insurance company to start an agency in Europe.

In 1917, the company changed its name to The Guardian Life Insurance Company of America. In 1925, Guardian converted from a mixed stock and mutual company to a wholly mutual company. As such, they have no stockholders or private owners. The policyholders own the company and profits are distributed to them in the form of dividends on policies. Guardian has paid dividends consistently for the 145 years they have been in business.

Guardian Investor Services is an indirect wholly owned subsidiary of The Guardian Life Insurance Company of America, New York,   is a limited liability company organized in 2001 as a successor to Guardian Investor Services Corporation, a New York corporation organized in 1968. It is the distributor of Guardian Annuities issued by the Guardian Insurance & Annuity Company, and The Park Avenue Portfolio family of mutual funds.
