Certified Public Accountants, are people who are dedicated financial professionals of the United States of America and who have spent a good deal of their academic career studying and passing the stringent Uniform Certified Public Accountant Examination. These professionals have, strived to meet and have met additional state education and experience requirements for their license to operate as a CPA. CPAs are the only professionally licensed people to provide the public, attestation which includes auditing and opinions on financial statements. While CPAs are known by the general public in part for their tax expertise and for maintaining the accounts books of small organizations, they are uniquely educated for the attestation function discussed above.
Hoffman, Stewart & Schmidt traces its history to 1979, when Mel
Nygaard, Burke Mims, Wally Hoffman, Ray Stewart, and Debbie Keller left the accounting firm of Hurdman & Cranstoun to form Nygaard, Mims & Hoffman. By 1980, the small office of 6 had grown to 14 staff people. Don Schmidt joined the firm as a tax partner in 1984.
For the next 10 years they worked to expand a strong client base and solid, long-term relationships. Two specialized function groups of nonprofit and construction then evolved. They moved into the age of computers and e-mail and had their first web page published and continued to move and grow by leaps and bounds. In 1994, founders Mel Nygaard and Burke Mims retired and, two years later, the firm's name was changed to Hoffman, Stewart & Schmidt P.C. These days we are located on the 15th floor of the U.S. Bancorp Tower in downtown Portland. Large enough to enjoy the benefits of a big firm, yet small enough to still be close-knit, we are always looking to add bright and talented people to their team.
