Family & Children Services

Family & Children Services, Inc. was established on July 15th, 1997 as a result of the merger of two well-established human service organizations in South Central Michigan, Family & Children Services of the Kalamazoo Area and Family and Children’s Service of Calhoun County.

Driven by their respective Boards of Directors, mergers were accomplished in the belief that each agency involved could better serve changing community needs if resources were united under one infrastructure. Their common goal was to increase the collective abilities of agencies and communities to capture new opportunities of direct benefit to families, individuals, and children in Barry, Calhoun, and Kalamazoo counties.

The company is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors consisting of up to 24 representatives equally distributed among the communities served. Board members reflect their communities’ needs and guide the agency in their varying areas of expertise. Their Board determines policy and guides the growth and mix of services offered to the community. Board members are elected to serve three-year terms of office, limited to two terms.

Their operating budget for 2005 is over eight million dollars. Major funding includes local United Ways, Community Mental Health organizations, the Michigan Department of Human Services, fees for service, and third-party reimbursements. Private contributions from businesses and individuals are welcomed.

The agency offers several vehicles for giving including Handle with Care Annual Fund and the James Stanley Gilmore, Ruth McNair Gilmore, Gail Gilmore Smith and Glen C. Smith, Jr. Children's Respite Endowment. All gifts are deductible for income tax purposes to the extent provided by law. They have been designated by the Internal Revenue Service as a nonprofit organization that meets the qualifications of the Internal Revenue Code.

Their history demonstrates the success of generations of community-based Boards of Directors questioning how best to serve the changing needs of individuals, families and children. Their vision led to an organizational culture which is flexible and adaptive to constantly changing community needs. Recent and past mergers were accomplished to increase communities  ability to capture new opportunities for their citizens by uniting resources under one infrastructure.
