In 2003, Ameren Corporation grew with the acquisition of CILCORP Inc., the parent company of Central Illinois Light Company (CILCO). The following year, the company grew again when it acquired Illinois Power Company, now known as AmerenIP. Each new unit featured larger and more efficient generators which produced power at lower cost. But demand for electricity had not grown quite as fast as power-producing capabilities, leaving part of the UE system uneconomically idle.
