AutoNation is the largest car dealer in the US. Formerly known as Republic Industries, the firm owns about 350 new vehicle franchises in more than 15 states and offers no-haggle sales policies and online sales through AutoNation.com and individual dealer Web sites. It has spun off its rental division, which included Alamo Rent a Car, National Car Rental System, and CarTemps USA, as ANC Rental. ESL Investments, William Crowley, are AutoNation directors, owns more than 29 percent of the company.  

AutoNation, Inc., through its subsidiaries, operates as an automotive retailer in the United States. The company offers a range of automotive products and services, including new vehicles, used vehicles, vehicle maintenance and repair services, vehicle parts, extended service contracts, vehicle protection products, and other aftermarket products. The company owns and operates 346 new vehicle franchises from 269 stores located in metropolitan markets in 17 states, principally in the Sunbelt region of the United States. The company was founded by H. Wayne Huizenga. AutoNation was incorporated in 1991. It was formerly known as Republic Industries, Inc. and changed its name to AutoNation, Inc. in 1999. AutoNation is headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
 
The company recorded revenues of 19,424.7 million dollars during the fiscal year ended December 2004, an increase of 3.8 percent over 2003. The increase was primarily attributable to enhanced industry environment.
 
Each AutoNation-owned dealership is a specialty retail business that draws its sales and profits from a diverse mix of retail-related activities and includes new vehicles having about 59 percent of an automotive dealership's revenue comes from its sales of new vehicles. AutoNation retailed 11.5 billion dollars of new vehicles in 2005-- more than any other single retailer. In all, AutoNation sells vehicles from 37 different manufacturer brands.

In used vehicles, about 23 percent of an automotive dealership's revenue comes from its sales of used vehicles. AutoNation sold 4.4 billion dollars worth of used vehicles in 2005.
 
In parts and service, about 14 percent of an automotive dealership's revenue comes from servicing vehicles, selling vehicle parts and performing collision repairs and other body work. AutoNation is America's largest provider of factory-authorized vehicle parts and services, generating 2.6 billion dollars of parts and service revenue in 2005 - more than any other single retailer.
