With the advent of electricity deregulation in Texas in 2002, wholesale electric power companies and retail electric providers pay them to deliver electricity over CenterPoint Energy's power lines. The electric transmission and distribution business maintains more than 3,631 miles of transmission lines and 41,913 miles of distribution lines. CenterPoint Energy's transmission and distribution unit delivered 73.6 million Megawatt hours of electricity to 102 communities around the Houston area in 2004.

CenterPoint Energy's natural gas distribution businesses have been serving customers for more than a century.
