Hussman Strategic Growth Fund in its 2005 survey screened 4,985 equity funds, removing those with more than two managers, managers with less than 3 years tenure, and funds with less than $100 million in assets. The remaining 865 funds were organized by investment objective and ranked according to how much risk-adjusted value the manager added relative to those with the same Value Line investment objective. Hussman was ranked No. 6 among fund managers in all investment objectives.
The key elements in evaluating securities and market conditions are valuations and market action. Each unique combination results in a distinct Market Climate, with its own profile of expected return and risk. Hussman Strategic Growth Fund invests primarily in U.S.stocks, with the objective of long-term capital appreciation.
Hussman Strategic Total Return Fund invests primarily in U.S. Treasury and government agency securities with the objective of long-term total return, and has the ability to take a limited exposure in foreign government bonds, utility stocks, and precious metals shares. The Hussman Strategic Growth Fund has the ability to hedge market risk by selling short major market indices in an amount up to, but not exceeding, the value of its stock holdings. It also has the ability to leverage the amount of stock it controls to as much as 1 1/2 times the value of net assets, by investing a limited percentage of assets in call options. The Fund may also invest up to 30 percent of assets in alternatives to the U.S. fixed income market, including foreign government bonds, utility stocks, and precious metals shares.
While the long-term success of the Fund can be measured by how well they satisfy their
objectives of capital appreciation and preservation.
