Smithfield Foods is a fortune 500 stock listed company trading under the symbol SFD.The Company has a good past stock performance record on the NYSE. Smithfield Foods, Inc. announced a net income for the third quarter of fiscal 2006 of 71.0 million dollars or 0.63 dollar per diluted share, versus net income last year of 97.5 million dollars or 0.87 per diluted share. Sales of 2.9 billion dollars were slightly less than last year, despite an overall volume increase, on lower average selling prices in the pork segment. Year-to-date results include pretax charges totaling 16.3 million dollars, or 0.09 dollar per diluted share, in connection with the restructuring of east coast pork processing operations in the second quarter. Year-to-date results last year included a pretax charge of 8.3 million dollar, or 0.05 dollar per share, related to operating losses and shutdown costs of the Showcase Foods plant and the settlement of a civil suit in the second quarter.
 
For the fourth consecutive year, Smithfield Foods, Inc. has been named to Fortune magazine’s prestigious annual list of America’s Most Admired Companies, this time ranking third among all U.S. food production companies.
 
Smithfield Foods moved up seven positions from its 10th-place ranking in 2005, when the company was placed in the magazine’s consumer food products category. This year Smithfield was switched to the food production category, a more appropriate category for its business operation.
 
In 2005 Smithfield Foods became the first company in its industry to achieve the prestigious ISO 14001 certification of its Environmental Management System (EMS) for all U.S. hog production facilities and all pork and beef processing facilities, except for recent acquisitions. ISO certification means that Smithfield is meeting a stringent set of internationally respected environmental management standards.
