The company’s retail activities are carried out by Southern Power Company, Alabama Power Company, Georgia Power Company, Gulf Power Company, Mississippi Power Company, and Savannah Electric and Power Company. Its other business activities include investments in synthetic fuels and leveraged lease projects, wireless telecommunication services, energy-related services, and natural gas marketing. The company serves approximately 4 million customers, as of April 26, 2005.
 
Southern Company is currently ranked number 165 on the latest Fortune 500 listing of the largest U. S. corporations. Southern Company reported earnings in 2005 of 1.59 billion dollars. The company has approximately 26,000 employees. Their growing competitive generation business includes income from Southern Power in addition to the existing competitive generation at our five operating companies. Competitive generation revenues were more than 1.6 billion dollars in 2005, or approximately 12.2 percent of the total company’s total revenues.
 
For the fifth year in a row, Southern Company was rated highest in customer satisfaction for electric utilities by the American Customer Satisfaction Index in their survey of residential customers across the United States.
