The Ryland Group, Inc. engages in home building and mortgage-financing in the United States. Its operations cover various aspects of the home buying process from design, construction, and sale to mortgage origination, title insurance, escrow, and home owners insurance brokerage services. The company operates in two segments, Homebuilding and Financial Services.
 
The Homebuilding segment sells and constructs single-family attached and detached single-family homes, sells land and lots, and builds attached homes, such as town homes and condominiums, including mid-rise buildings. The Financial Services segment provides mortgage loan origination primarily of the company's homebuilder loans, and offers title, escrow, and insurance brokerage services.
 
The company achieved consolidated revenues of 4.8 billion dollars, up 21.9 percent from more than 3.9 billion dollars in 2004, and rose to 469 on the list of the Fortune 500. Their consolidated net earnings leaped 39.5 percent to 447.1 million dollars from 320.5 million dollars the previous year. New orders climbed 3.8 percent to 17,517 from 16,880 in 2004. Closings increased by 10.4 percent to 16,673 from 15,101 the previous year. Earnings per share rose 42.0 percent to a record 9.03 dollars. And their year-end backlog reached an all time high of 8,464 homes and a dollar value of 2.6 billion dollars, providing them with nearly half of their anticipated deliveries for 2006.
 
They ended 2005 not only with their seventh consecutive year of records, but also with a market capitalization of more than 3.3 billion dollars, investment-grade credit ratings, profitable performance from each of their 22 homebuilding divisions across the country, and an even more firmly established legacy of consistent success.
