D. E. Shaw Valence

The D. E. Shaw group is a specialized investment and technology development firm whose activities center on various aspects of the intersection between technology and finance.

The Company headquartered located in New York, the D. E. Shaw group encompasses a number of closely related entities with approximately US $20 billion in aggregate capital. Activities range from computer-based quantitative investment management to the development and financing of technology oriented business ventures, but are tied together by a common focus on the economic implications of technological innovation. Since its organization in 1988, the firm has earned an international reputation for financial innovation and technological leadership, and has been described as the most intriguing and mysterious force on Wall.

The Company group is a major participant in many of the world’s capital markets, trading stocks, options, futures, bonds, currencies, convertible securities, swaps, and a variety of other financial instruments issued by companies and governments in both the major industrialized nations and a number of emerging markets.

The D. E. Shaw group seeks to make selected private equity investments within industries it believes are likely to be fundamentally transformed by the use of technology. Transactions have ranged from purely passive investments in existing ventures managed by outside entrepreneurs to start-up firms that were organized by and developed within the D. E. Shaw organization.

The Company’s first two technology venture investments reflected its conclusion, based on a considerable amount of technical and market research that advanced computational techniques would ultimately have a major impact on the way chemists design molecules for use in pharmaceutical products, new materials, and other applications. In 1994, the firm purchased 36 percent of Molecular Simulations Inc., which grew to become the world’s leading supplier of computational chemistry software before merging with Pharmacopeia, Inc. in 1998.

The D. E. Shaw group later assumed a major ownership position in Schrodinger, a spinoff of Caltech and Columbia University that has since attracted substantial funding from the federal government and a number of large pharmaceutical firms to support the commercial application of significant computational breakthroughs achieved by its founders within the fields of quantum chemistry, drug design, molecular modeling, and protein structure determination.

The D. E. Shaw group was also responsible for the conceptualization, organization, and initial financing of Juno Online Services, Inc., which grew to become one of the nation’s largest Internet access providers.
