Alltel Corporation, through its subsidiaries, provides wireless and wireline local, long-distance, network access, and Internet services in the United States. It operates through three segments, wireless, wire line, and communications support services (CSS).
Alltel was founded in 1943 and is headquartered in Little Rock, Arkansas.
The Wireless segment involves in cellular, personal communications services, and paging operations. It offers various voice features along with its wireless calling plans, including call waiting, call forwarding, caller identification, three-way calling, no answer transfer, directory assistance call completion, and voicemail. This segment also provides Touch2Talk, a walkie-talkie service for customers to talk to business associates, family, and friends; and downloadable wireless applications, such as games, ringtones, wallpaper, and office applications, as well as offers text and picture messaging services, and roaming services.
The Wireline segment comprises incumbent local exchange carrier, competitive local exchange carrier, and Internet access operations. It offers Internet access, billing and collections, and directory advertising services. This segment also provides facilities for private line, data transmission, and other communications services. The CSS segment consists of the company’s long-distance and network management services, product distribution, and telecommunications information services operations. It also publishes telephone directories for affiliates and other independent telephone companies.
The company also provides customer care and other data processing and outsourcing services to telecommunications companies. As of March 2, 2006, it served approximately 15 million customers. The company sells its wireless products and services through its retail stores, retail kiosks, dealers, and direct sales representatives, as well as through warehouses and counter-sales showrooms.
