Washington Mutual was established in 1889 and is headquartered in Seattle, Washington. The company operates in four segments of Home Loans, Retail Banking and Financial Services, Card Services, and Commercial.
 
The Home Loans segment engages in buying and selling home loans in the secondary market, selling insurance related products and participating in reinsurance activities with other insurance companies and originating and servicing fixed rate, adjustable-rate, and hybrid home loans, as well as government insured or guaranteed home loans.
 
The Retail Banking and Financial Services segment engages in originating, managing, and servicing home equity loans and lines of credit; providing investment advisory and brokerage services, selling annuities, managing mutual funds, and offering various deposit and other retail banking products, such as checking and interest bearing platinum checking accounts, as well as other personal checking, savings, money market deposit, and time deposit accounts.
 
The Card Services segment’s activities include originating and servicing of credit card loans and providing other cardholder services.
 
The Commercial segment offers financing services to developers and investors for the acquisition or construction of multifamily dwellings and other commercial properties, originates and services multifamily and other commercial real estate loans, as well as holds or sells the loans in the secondary market and provides financing and other banking services to mortgage bankers for the origination of residential mortgage loans.
 
As of December 31, 2005, the company operated 2,140 retail banking stores, 487 lending stores and centers, and 3,747 automated teller machines.
