The Corporation was found in 1853 by John Aikman Stewart, a 30 year old actuary for the U.S. Life insurance Co. of New York, who petitioned New York State legislature to approve the creation of a financial company. Board members included Peter Cooper, renowned inventor, industrialist and philanthropist and Erastus Corning, a leading railroad developer and manufacturer of iron and steel.
