Reinvest or Redeem Treasury Bills, Notes, Bonds, and TIPS

If you hold Treasury bills, notes, bonds, or TIPS until they mature, at maturity you can use the security's principal to buy another security, or redeem the security.

How you exercise those options depends on whether you hold your security in TreasuryDirect or Legacy Treasury Direct.

NOTE: If you hold a bill with a bank, broker, or dealer, consult them to learn your options.

TreasuryDirect

Schedule a Repeat Purchase

A repeat purchase, similar to a reinvestment in Legacy Treasury Direct, allows you to use the funds from a maturing security to buy a new security. To schedule a repeat purchase:

  • Log in to your account
  • Provide instructions to put the funds from your maturing security into your Certificate of Indebtedness (C of I)
  • Schedule the purchase of another security, and provide instructions to use your C of I as the source of funds.

You can schedule a repeat purchase anytime before your security matures, and you can use the funds to buy any type of security sold in TreasuryDirect, including savings bonds.

Redeem

To redeem your bills, notes, bonds, or TIPS, you don't need to take action. If you do not provide instructions to deposit the security's principal into your C of I, it will be deposited into your designated bank account. The deposit is made on the day your security matures.

Legacy Treasury Direct

Reinvest

If you haven't already scheduled a reinvestment for your bill, or if you hold a note or bond, we mail you a notice about 45 days before your security matures. The notice gives instructions on how to reinvest. (TIPS cannot be reinvested in Legacy Treasury Direct.)

You can reinvest by these methods:

  • Web
Available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
  • Phone
Available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, at 800-722-2678.
  • Mail
    • Mail us the notice we mail to you about 45 days before your security matures.
    • Submit a "Reinvestment Request" (PD F 5180).

NOTE: To reinvest only a portion of your maturing security’s principal, use the "Reinvestment Request."

You can ask us to cancel or change a reinvestment. Do this by:

  • Phone. Call 800-722-2678, choose option #5, and speak with a customer service representative.
  • Fax. Submit information to 304-480-7728.
  • Mail. Send information to your customer contact center.

Redeem

To redeem your security, you don't need to take action. On the day the security matures, the Treasury Dept. will deposit its principal into your bank account.

NOTICE: Some TIPS, some 10-year fixed-principal notes, and some bonds are reopenings of previously issued securities. If you buy or reinvest into a reopened security, you may owe accrued interest and a premium.
